Directions
Horsley Hills is located about 150 kms from Bengaluru in Chittoor district of Andhra Pradesh. The approximate driving time is 3 to 3.5 hours and that makes it a convenient day trip lasting perhaps about 12 hours. The shortest routes are:
Bengaluru-Hosakote-Chintamani-Gownpalli-Horsley Hills
Bengaluru-Hosakote-Chintamani-Marepalli-Madanapalli-Horsley Hills
I took the Chintanami-Madanapalli route for onward journey and returned via Chennai-Benguluru highway.
On the way back, avoid taking the bypass that turns left just before Madanapalli. I took this and ended up with a much longer drive, and eventually reached Madanapalli again and had to navigate through very narrow roads. I finally did end up on Tirupati-Bengaluru national highway, after passing through agricultural fields and even stopped to pluck tamarind from the roadside trees.
Road condition
By and large, the road condition is ok to good. After Hosakote, if you take the Chintamani route, watch for the road humps, some of them very unscientifically designed.
Restaurants on the way
Nandi Grand on the Chintamani road, is a good vegetarian restaurant to stop for breakfast. It is few Kms away from Hosakote and after you take a left at Hosakote and then a right towards Chintamani, you will see Nandi Grand on the left side.
Madanapalli is another stop you can make for a coffee break. Just watch both sides of the road for a decent restaurant. If you miss, there is a coffee bar on the left side just outside the town.
At Horsley Hills, the only decent restaurant is Haritha restaurant run by AP Tourism Board. For lunch, only buffet meal is available. Food is ok.
On the way back, if you connect to the Chennai-Bengaluru highway, there are restaurants near Kolar and after Kolar, just before Hosakote. This route is slightly longer but more comfortable once it gets dark.
What to do at Horsley Hills
Situated at an altitude of ~1300 m, there is not a great deal to see and do. Few view points, a mini zoo, activities such as ATV ride, High ropes, swimming and rock climbing. The activities looked quite basic in the sense they are good for kids but may not necessarily excite adults. If you intend to swim, do carry appropriate gear.
Overall, Horsley Hills does not have anything special. The drive is a bit scenic once the climb starts. It is also nice to sit at the view points. So if you are looking to simply have a good time with friends or family, Horsely hills is good option.
