Antharagange caves
Directions
Located in Kolar district, Antharagange is less than 2 hours drive(~65kms) from Bengaluru, on the Old Madras Road(NH 4). While NH4 is well maintained, it is not the same once you take the deviation but that is any way a short distance.
What to do
There is parking available with a not so clean rest room. After a bit of a walk on concrete steps, you will reach the temple, Dakshina Kashi Kshetra. Plenty of monkeys in this area, so watch out if you have plans of eating anything here! To reach the caves, you have to walk further up the hill. Overall, more than a km of walk from the parking lot.
The entrance to the caves is not marked and not easy to find. But you will always find some local boys who will guide you. They will lead you inside and show you the exit. It takes about 30 minutes to traverse the length of the caves. So don’t expect anything very elaborate. There is bit of climbing/descending to be done, and siding through narrow crevices. Though it is fairly easy, better to be careful as you cannot afford to twist your ankle here. The structure inside is nice to view-I am always amazed at what the nature can create.

You are can trek in the hills if you wish to. There is no specific path as such. The views from top of the hill are quite nice.
Restaurants
There is no decent restaurant in this area but you will find a few on the highway(for instance, The Terminal and Nandi Grand near Hosakote, Kamat Upachar near Narsapura). If you travel a bit from Kolar towards Tirupati(NH75), you will find Maiyas, Kamat and Vasudev Adiga.Good to carry snacks as the lunch may be delayed!
Yelagiri hills
Distance and the drive
Located at an altitude of 1700m in Tamil Nadu, Yelagiri hills is ~160kms from Bengaluru. A large part of the drive(~130kms) is on the Chennai highway via Krishnagiri and hence quick. Average driving time is little over 3.5 hours. But this depends on getting out of Bengaluru quick enough!
What to do
The climb to Yelagiri is quite scenic and though there are few hairpin bends, driving is quite easy. Very green also, as this is a reserved forest area. There is not much to see in Yelagiri hills but you can visit Punganur Lake and the nature park. There is also Nilavoor lake. Kids can also indulge in few adventure activities.

Food
Best to eat at one of the hotels/resorts with lodging facility. Food is average. Did not find any good pure vegetarian restaurant. You can also try the Sterling resorts on the Nilavoor road.
You find good vegetarian restaurants on the highway to Krishnagiri, including A2B, Sri Krishna Inn and Saravana Bhavan. And a couple more after Krishnagiri. Good for breakfast.
Overall, don’t expect too much. This is more about the need to get away and enjoy some time with family and friends. Best to visit in the winter months when it is also a bit green.
