Gaganachukki and Barachukki
The Falls are located near the town of Shivanasamudra in Mandya district at a distance of ~130+ kms from Bengaluru. You can either take the Mysore state highway via Maddur or the Kanakapura road. In term of time, not much of a diiference. Parking is available in both the locations.
The condition of road is by and large good.
Created by river Cauvery, the eastern branch is known as Barachukki and the western branch is known as Gaganachukki. They are located at a distance of few kilometers from each other. Shivanasamudra is the site of Asia’s first hydro-electric power plant set up in 1902 and is still functional.
The water falls over a height of over 200ft. and when in full flow, is a magnificent sight. Best time to visit would be dictated by rains and the release of water from upstream KRS dam. So visit after the monsoon has set well or just thereafter. At Barachukki, there are steps that lead you down to the base of the waterfalls and you can get into water but do be careful as the rocks are slippery and the current can be strong. But the steps are often closed. Visitors are not allowed after dark.
Restaurants
It is a good picnic spot, especially when the river is in full flow. I did not notice any good quality restaurants but water and other beverages are available. There are plenty of good restaurants on Mysore road but hardly any on Kanakapura road until you reach Kanakapura (between Kanakpura and NICE road junction).
