I was informed that the Indian driving licences are valid for a period of upto 3 months from arrival. I rented a car for one day and it passed off without any incident and hence, I cannot practically comment about the Indian Driving Licence validity! I was not carrying International Driving Licence.
I rented a mid size car to drive to Sommaroy, located on an island next to Tromso island. It was a very beautiful and scenic drive …lakes, mountains, fjords, and I passed over some nice bridges. I could halt wherever I wished to. The entire journey took about 8 hours. With a map, and the signboards, driving was a breeze and I did not take a single wrong turn.
Norway drives on the right side and hence, those of us used to left hand drive have to be extra careful. The roads are not that broad, and in many areas outside the town, fairly narrow. My wife kept complaining I was driving too close to the edge on the right side but my logic was better go off the road than hit an oncoming vehicle! Near Sommaroy, there was a bridge over the water with only one lane, with traffic being regulated by a signal. Imagine if you miss the signal! There was another such narrow bridge connecting two islands in Sommaroy and until you get to the top of the bridge, one cannot see the vehicles coming from the other side.
The one way bridge On way to Sommaroy
The good thing was there was hardly any traffic after exiting Tromso.
Cost of rental
It cost me ~INR 10k to rent the car for 24 hours. Had to top up the fuel tank and the cost of unleaded petrol was over INR 130 per litre, despite Norway being a producer and exporter of Oil! And I thought only India taxed fuel heavily!
