We have all read about Robinson Crusoe in childhood. The experience on the islands is similar except that all your requirements are taken care of and there are no cannibals! Unfortunately, wi-fi is available and the mobile phones work, hence there is some distraction. The rooms/villas are all air-conditioned and there is a TV and a DVD player but I never bothered to switch on the TV.
The island I went to had an area of ~222,500 sq. m, with a maximum width of 250 m and length of 900m and located ~80kms from Male.
Plenty of activities to keep you busy
The list of activities you can engage in is endless. Some of the activities I enjoyed include the following:
–Walking around the island early in the morning, starting just before sunrise. The tide is low in the morning and corals on the shore are all exposed. Lovely sight.
–Kayaking around the island.
–Snorkelling around the island. Specific channels are marked in the reef through which you can get to the edge of the reef where the sea gets deeper. It can be a scary experience, looking down into darker depths next to the shallower edge. I could see variety of corals and innumerable colorful fish. Great experience.
–Relaxing or reading in the hammocks. Can’t get better than this.
–Wind sailing lessons. Somehow I kept falling into the sea as it was a bit too windy.
–Sunset cruise. The boat crew managed to find a school of dolphins and chased them to a distance.
Though I was keen, I could not do scuba diving as the sea was quite rough. There are plenty of games as well to keep you occupied. Did not feel the need to use the fitness center as the activities provided me with much more exercise than I need!
Vegetarian Food
Breakfast, lunch and Dinner are buffet type and served in a common restaurant. Higher priced villas(eg. Water villas) have a separate restaurant. But the resorts have other restaurants where you can dine on payment basis. Do remember that other than the common restaurant where you can be seated even in your beach wear, other restaurants may require a more formal dress.
Buffet food has quite a bit of vegetarian options but always good to check before. While there is variety, honestly, I was a bit tired of the food after 3 days. Also tiring was explaining to people why have I come all the way to an island if I don’t enjoy seafood!
Entertainment
Over a week, there are DJ nights, screening of movies in common area and live screening of international sports events, either in the common area or one of the restaurants where there is satellite TV. There is a library as well and you can borrow DVDs if you wish to watch in the privacy of your villa/room.
All in all, very refreshing and almost a perfect holiday.
